Expedia Hiring 130 in Las Vegas

Online travel company Expedia announced Friday that it would be adding 130 jobs to its payroll in Las Vegas, Nevada. After the new hires are in place, Expedia will employ about 500 people in the Las Vegas area.

“Expedia has long been a partner of the Las Vegas travel and tourism industry,” said Vice President of Market Management Michael Reichartz, “and we are pleased to be able to add jobs in this community. This expansion means new jobs for 130 Nevadans and we are hopeful for further growth, which is always something to celebrate.”

Expedia is the world’s largest online travel company.

Sahara Shuttering Hotel Rooms for the Winter

Citing falling demand for hotel rooms in Las Vegas, the Sahara is closing two of its towers for the winter, and possibly longer. The main Tangiers tower and the casino will remain open. This falls on the heels of Binion’s decision to close all its rooms, which went into effect yesterday. It’s not known yet how many jobs will be lost as a result of the Sahara’s decision.

The Sahara opened in 1952 and has a total of 1,720 rooms. It is owned by Los Angeles based SBE Entertainment.

Delta Air Closing Two Centers Overseas and Bringing Jobs Back to US

Delta Air Lines Inc. has announced a plan to close call centers in London and Montreal and bring those jobs back to the US in a move designed to improve efficiency. Delta stopped using an additional call center in India in April of this year, citing customer complaints. The company has not yet said where or when those jobs would become available. The Montreal center, which employs 142 people, will close at the end of August, 2010 and the London center , which employs 187, will close sometimes in the 4th quarter of 2010.

Travel Industry Expects to Pick up Jobs Next Year

The travel industry has been hit hard by the global recession, with domestic job losses for the last two years of around 400,000. That may be behind us, according to some industry analysts. Leisure and business travel as well as overseas tourism is expected to pick up again in 2010 and may lead to as many as 90,000 new jobs in the industry.

Foreign travel to the US is expected to increase by about three percent, but two thirds of that will come from Mexico and Canada. This tempers some of the anticipated gains because visitors from overseas generally spend more money while in country than do our neighbors to the north and south.
