AstraZeneca PLC is eliminating 1,800 research and development jobs as part of a restructuring process. The pharmaceutical company said about 550 jobs will be eliminated at its U.S. headquarters in Delaware, where it psychiatric research laboratory will be closed. Florence, South Carolina’s ESAB Welding will cut an undisclosed number of jobs by the end of 2009. The firm laid off 90 workers in April. General Motors’ Saab Automobile unit will lay off 701 employees. Saab reached an agreement with labor unions, and decreased the job cut total from 750.
