Newspaper publisher Gannett will cut 1,400 jobs, or 3% of its work force. Staffers were informed of the impending layoffs today. The majority of firings will occur before next Friday, July 9th. ADP Employer Services says US private sector employers cut 473,000 jobs in June, more than the 395,000 previously forecast. 3M is laying off 40 workers from its engineering division. Most of those affected work at the firm’s Maplewood, Minnesota headquarters. 3M is also closing a hearing- and eye-protection products plant in Southbridge, Massachusetts, cutting 200 employees. Grand Rapids, Michigan office furniture manufacturer Steelcase will lay off 200 white-collar employees, as the firm adjusts to a one-third drop in sales.
