The international retailer has not announced how many more jobs will be lost. In the past year, it has cut 5,000 positions.

The firm still intends to open 50 new stores, creating new jobs.

Founded in 1943, IKEA is a privately-held, international home products retailer that sells flat pack furniture, accessories, and bathroom and kitchen items in their retail stores around the world. The company, based in Älmhult, Sweden, pioneered flat-pack design furniture at affordable prices; it is now the world’s largest furniture manufacturer.

Ikea has 246 stores and 140,000 staff globally.

One hundred and fifteen employees in Sneedville, and 30 in Bean Station, will lose their jobs.

The company laid off 40 workers beginning in January. The company also tried reducing hours, and unpaid furloughs, to save money.

Founded in 1975, Bean Station, Tennessee-based Volunteer Fabricators is a division of The HTHackney Company.

The furniture manufacturer will replace 150 jobs lost in recent layoffs, and add 152 new positions.

The firm received incentives from the One North Carolina Fund.

Danbury, Connecticut’s Ethan Allen Global is a North American furniture chain with almost 300 stores across the United States and Canada. It was founded in 1932 by two brothers-in-law, Nathan S. Ancell and Theodore Baumritter. In 2005, it employed 5,800 people. It has eight manufacturing facilities in the United States and one in Mexico.

American of Martinsville will make a $1.4 million investment in equipment at the plant, creating the new jobs. It currently employs 121.

Barcalounger will move its corporate HQ to American of Martinsville’s headquarters, which employs 40. Fourteen new positions will open up at the headquarters.

Mathematicians agree this means the most likely number of layoffs is… carry the three… 24. The company has 290 employees at its Rocky Mount factories.

Uttermost manufactures and distributes home accessories., including mirrors, lamps, framed art, vases and other goods.

The firm said these were its first layoffs since its founding in 1975.

WestPoint, which makes bed & bath home fashions, will also close its blanket plant in Biddeford, Maine, and another plant in Chipley, Florida.

In the midst of the worst economic meltdown since the Great Depression, WestPoint has chosen to offshore American jobs.

WestPoint Home will have only one plant remaining, in Greenville, Alabama.

Today, WestPoint Home has around 6,700 employees, 16 plants, six distribution centers and 30 outlet stores.

Caldwell County officials have given the company $500,000 in incentives. The consolidation will add 30 jobs to the 200-employee plant in Caldwell over five years.

Wilkes County manager John Yates said he had not heard about the consolidation, but that the company wasn’t interested in a counter offer from Wilkes.

The Dalton, Georgia-based company will shutter a spun yarn facility in Calhoun and a filament yarn facility in Valdosta. Production at the plants will cease in the next few weeks.

Shaw employs about 18,000 people in Georgia, and will try to find jobs for the laid off workers at other Shaw plants.

Shaw Industries Group, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, is the world’s largest carpet manufacturer.

The $2.15 million project will also save 500 existing jobs, Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced.

Vaughan-Bassett manufactures bedroom and dining room furniture.

The company employs more than 550 workers at its Galax facility.

Most of the jobs are full-time positions, 96% of which were filled by locals.

“It’s nice to travel a mile and a half and come to work in my community,” said area man David Patnode, who used to commute to Vermont to work.

The store doesn’t open officially until this week, at a grand opening set for March 5th.
