Meridian Automotive Systems is shutting down its Shelbyville, Indiana factory, and putting 295 people on the street. The firm had previously announced layoffs of 200 this Summer. Auto parts manufacturer Metaldyne will close its plant in Middleville, Michigan, laying off 110 people. When the plant permanently shuts down on August 31st, 87 hourly and 23 salaried workers will be unemployed. General Motors announced a nationwide staff reduction of 1,600 salaried positions today. Most of the layoffs will take effect this week, with the rest finished by May 1st.
