US private-sector companies shed 522,000 jobs in January, according to the ADP employment index. The index, compiled from anonymous payroll data, showed that goods-producing industries lost 243,000 jobs, while service-producing industries lost 279,000 jobs. The US private sector lost 693,000 jobs in December with small businesses, construction firms and manufacturers cutting payrolls, according to the ADP National Employment Report. The Monster.com Index, monthly gauge of online labor demand in the US, fell in December, as job conditions worsened due to the recession.
