St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City Lays Off 300

St Vincents HospitalSt. Vincent’s Hospital in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan has laid off 300 workers. 32 medical residents, managers at all levels and members of 1199 SEIU, the hospital union working in dietary, housekeeping and the transportation departments all received lay off notices on Friday.

Other workers were asked to take temporary pay cuts of 10-25% to prevent the facility from closing. Executives and doctors in leadership positions were asked to take cuts of 25%. Unionized workers including nurses were asked to take cuts of 10-15% were voting on whether to accept them.

Lay offs and pay cuts are a part of a restructuring plan to keep the hospital open. St. Vincent’s is $700 million in debt and losing $ 5 million to $10 million a month.
