Featured, Job Loss

job cutsThe San Marino Unified School District in Los Angeles County is poised to lay off nearly one-third of its teachers. The distric is set to send preliminary layoff notices to 43 of the district’s 130 teachers on March 15.

The Pasadena Star-News reports the potential layoffs come despite the fact residents in the high-rent city pay more than $1,000 a year in parcel taxes. The school superintendent gave warning that “we’re almost at a point where we are unable to operate as a public school.”

Officials say the district is facing a $5 million budget deficit. Final layoff notices are to be received by May 15. The San Marino Teachers Association didn’t comment in the story.
