Mapa Spontex will lay of 132 workers in Maury County, Tennessee beginning on March 19. The lay offs will be completed by the end of June. Spontex USA is based in Columbia and makes cleaning supplies including rubber gloves, sponges and scouring pads. In 2008 Mapa Spontex posted sales of about $800 million, with adjusted earnings at $80 million. Mapa Spontex’s baby care and home care businesses were bought by The Jarden Corp. of Rye, New York for $500 million. The deal was expected to close in the second quarter of 2010. The lay off announcement comes on the heels of this buyout.
