abcnews_genericBeing called a “fundamental transformation,” ABC has announced plans to cut around 20% of their news staff. David Westin, president of ABC news, said buyout offers will be made in the next few days.

“The response to this voluntary program will determine the extent to which we will need to make further reductions,” said Mr. Westin.

Westin made reference to taking advantage of digital technologies, a move which will result in “substantially fewer” positions.

The reductions in staff are part of an industry-wide trend, as the Los Angeles Times has said they are looking to cut as many as 300 jobs (also a 20% reduction), and the New York Times has estimated a decrease of around 400.
