The US Census Bureau is in the process of hiring one million people in preparation for next year’s nose count. Most of the jobs pay between ten and twenty dollars per hour. Democratic Senator Charles Schummer along with three other Senate Democrats is urging the Obama administration to give hiring preference to the unemployed and to actively recruit at unemployment offices. Although it seems self obvious that most of the applicants for what are temporary jobs would be unemployed, Schumer wants people whose benefits are close to expiring or have already expired to be given priority. The demand for jobs is so high that the census bureau has cancelled a publicity campaign advertising the positions.
