toledooEmployees at the University of Toledo Medical Center were notified on Monday about another round of layoffs. 50 Employees are in danger of being laid off as the medical center attempts to reduce operating expenses.

According to Tobin Klinger, a spokesman for the university, the precise number of layoffs will depend on bumping rights among union employees.

President of the university, Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, as well as Dr. Jeffrey Gold, the university’s provost and executive vice president for health affairs, sent out a letter to the employees saying that the layoffs were necessary in order to cut operating expenses.

“This decision was not easy, however given the ongoing economic situation we must continue to find ways to achieve more with fewer resources,” the letter said.

In 2008, the hospital was forced to shut down a 12-bed geriatric psychiatric unit, cutting 37 jobs.
