Sallie Mae to Bring 2,000 Jobs Back to US

Sallie MaeStudent loan company Sallie Mae, aka SLM Corporation, will move its overseas operations back to the United States, creating 2,000 domestic jobs.

SLM plans to add staff over the next 18 months in call centers, information technology and operations support across the US. The company will pull jobs from India, Mexico and the Philippines.

The Obama administration has proposed a 2010 budget that could harm Sallie Mae’s business by shifting all federal student loans into a program administered by the Department of Education.

Sallie Mae, the largest US student loan company, employs over 8,000 people.

The company reported a loss of $216 million in Q4, during which it made $4.8 billion in student loans.
