Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina is eliminating 534 of its 19,000-plus jobs this week, and targeting more people who will be laid off if more cuts are needed.
Most of the jobs will end with the school year. Some people who have access to sensitive financial or technology information are being terminated immediately.
The eliminated positions include 310 in schools, 133 support jobs and 91 in central offices. No classroom teachers are being laid off yet, but teachers in administrative or support posts could be cut. Some teacher assistants also are among the cuts.
Early this month, CMS notified 13 human-resources workers their jobs were being eliminated, with a chance to compete for four new ones.
Up to 782 more jobs could be cut, including classroom teachers and assistant principals.
