American Axle & Manufacturing will lay off several hundred workers at a factory in Hamtramck, Detroit, according to UAW Local 235.
American Axle plans to send the jobs to Mexico, starting in May.
The company’s largest customer is General Motors, which plans to shut down 13 plants this summer.
American Axle & Manufacturing, headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, is a manufacturer of automobile driveline, drivetrain, electronic integrated power units and chassis systems, as well as metal formed products. It was formed in 1994 from five of General Motors’ plants. American Axle has grown to supply various OEM manufacturers around the globe in the passenger car, light truck, and commercial vehicle segments.
